Morpho-anatomical features of the leaves and stems of Baccharis notosergila (Asteraceae) and their relationship with the environment and chemical control

Background and aims: Baccharis notosergila is an aggressive weed inhabiting the Salado river basin, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. The aims of this work were: to analyze morpho-anatomy histochemistry aerial vegetative organs in order understand adaptation strategies that ensure its survival, as well expand knowledge on traits determining resistance control methods applied. M&M: material collected was prepared examined with conventional techniques microscopy. Histochemical tests identify starch, resins, polyphenols, lipophilic substances were performed. Results: major features found small deciduous leaves; uniseriate epidermis massive striate cuticle; stomata at level or slightly above other epidermal cells glandular trichomes secreting oily substances; both surfaces isobilateral mesophyll. Tannins, starch identified leaves stems; resins lipids ducts, calcium oxalate crystals leaves, stems capitate trichomes. Conclusions: B. explain tolerance unfavorable conditions basin area, high competitive ability over others species natural prairie. reduced traits, chemical constitute a physical barrier reducing dehydration penetration herbicides applied for control. Botanical basis design development new appropriate management species.
